Abstract |
George Johnson (1837-1911), the Dominion statistician, was employed by the federal Department of Agriculture during the period of the 1880s to 1900s. This manuscript outlines the history of the colonization of the ten counties that make up the Eastern Townships, starting with the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists after 1783, and Johnson's research into changes in the population of the Townships and the nationalities of the new settlers. He provides a statistical comparison of the growing Francophone population with the declining Anglophone population for the years 1871, 1881 and 1891.
