The Royal Canadian Volunteers 1794-1802. An Historical Sketch
|
Abstract |
This regiment, dating to 1794, was probably the first British corps recruited and officered by Canadians. The 1st Battalion was staffed by Francophones while the 2nd Battalion - known as Macdonell's Battalion - was predominantly Scottish. The 2nd Battalion spent the first two years of its existence stationed at Montreal, while detachments or perhaps the whole Battalion was later stationed for periods at Sorel, St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, and Laprairie. In 1798 the headquarters of the Macdonell Battalion was transferred to Fort George on the Niagara River (Niagara-on-the-Lake). The author gives short biographical sketches of some of the officers.
