Gender, Profession and Principals: The Teachers of Quebec Protestant Academies, 1875-1900

Abstract |
The Protestant Committee of the Council of Public Instruction held autonomous authority over Quebec Protestant education during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This committee initiated numerous changes to upgrade the caliber of Protestant teachers, principals and curricula in Quebec. At the same time, McGill Normal School opened degree programs to women. The author argues that although women’s training now awarded them increased status as teaching professionals, they were still not admitted into the small realm of principals.
