Steinberg: The Breakup of a Family Empire
|
Abstract |
A history of the growth and break-up of the Montreal-based Steinberg supermarket and real estate empire, founded by Ida Steinberg in 1917. Her son, Sam (1905-1978), developed Ida's grocery store at 4423 St. Lawrence Boulevard into a multi-million dollar business with stores throughout Quebec and Ontario. Disagreement among Sam's three children after his death led to the sale of the family grocery store business in 1989, and the Steinberg family name disappeared from the stores in 1992.
