| Abstract |
The author portrays the plight of approximately 500 homeless women who during 1977 and 1978 came to two Montreal drop-in shelters -- Chez Doris and Maison Marguerite. In separate chapters she describes the shelters and their surrounding area, the main problems of the women, the depths of their misery, the lack of community resources, and the hopelessness of efforts at "rehabilitation." Chez Doris was founded by community worker Sheila Baxter in 1977 following the murder of Doris Halfkenny Seale, a homeless woman whose murdered body was found in a shed on St. Urbain Street in Chinatown on November 2, 1974.
