Abstract |
The history of two Montreal-published periodicals of the 1850s, "The Snow Drop: A Juvenile Magazine" and "The Maple Leaf". The Snow Drop was edited by two sisters (née Foster) who had moved to Montreal from Boston: Mrs Eliza Lanesford Cushing (b. 1794) and Mrs Harriet Vining Cheney (b. 1796). It was published in Montreal by the firm of Lovell and Gibson. Setting out to instruct and amuse, the magazine was directed primarily at girls, with each issue providing one or two stories along with articles on historical events, famous people, natural history, and faraway places. The slight Canadian content had to do mostly with the past or with the quainter aspects of Canadian life. Most of The Snow Drop's identified authors were from old or New England, like the books and periodicals from which it published selections.
