Abstract |
The Beaver Hall Group, Montreal's first association of modern artists, was an assemblage of mostly Anglophone painters formed in May 1920 who had met while studying art at a school run by Art Association of Montreal. The group took its name from 305 Beaver Hall Hill, the downtown Montreal address where its members shared studio space. The original members of the Beaver Hall Group was comprised of eleven men and eight women, and it was the first Canadian artists' association in which women played a central role. Although the Group disbanded in 1923, six of the women artists decided to continue with their meetings and soon they were joined by three more female members. When the group gave up the rented studio on Beaver Hall Hill the women maintained their working studios at their homes.
