Abstract |
The author examines the participation of Montreal artists Prudence Heward (1896-1947), Lilias Torrance Newton (1896-1980) and Jori Smith (1907-2005) in the development of Canadian pictorial modernity. More precisely, the author studies these artists' portraits of women and children painted from 1920 to 1948 since the human figure is one of the privileged themes of nascent Canadia modernity. The author observes that the trio of artists posed a modern look on the body of the woman, among other things by repeatedly painting a person confident in herself and with a well-defined character. However, she explains, it is mainly thanks to the nude that Heward, Torrance Newton and Smith were able to question the representation of women as a painted subject since the many naked figures they painted often defy the conventions that governed gender in Canada during the years 1920 to 1940.
