Abstract |
Based on two unpublished manuscripts by Jacques Viger (1787-1858), this article includes a comparison of school attendance of Francophone and Anglophone Montreal students between 1801 and 1836. The author begins by showing that the components of the island's school system were both numerous and particularly diverse. It then goes on to discuss and compare school attendance of urban and rural populations, of boys and girls, of Francophones and Anglophones, taking into account the number of schools per capita as well as the number of schools operated by different educators. Finally, the author attempts to determine the manner in which the cost of education influenced attendance. Instead of "apathy" and "indifference", the author argues that the prime determinants of school attendance in Lower Canada during the decade under review depended on the availability of specific types of schools and economic factors. She concludes that schooling was on the whole easier for city dwellers than for rural dwellers, for boys than for girls, for Anglophones than for Francophones and, especially in rural areas, for the well-off than for the poor.
