A Study of the CPR-sponsored Quebec Folk Song and Handicraft Festivals, 1927-1930

Abstract |
In May of 1927 and 1928, and October 1930, the Montreal-based Canadian Pacific Railway sponsored three Folk Song and Handicraft Festivals in Quebec City. Two men were responsible for promoting these festivals: the Scottish-born John Murray Gibbon (1875-1952), head of publicity for the Canadian Pacific, and C. Marius Barbeau (1883-1969), an anthropologist at the National Museum of Canada. The author argues that these festivals presented the folk music, handicrafts and dance of French Canada to an audience of affluent Anglophones.
