A Minority's Plea for the Supremacy of the Charter
|
Abstract |
A reprint of a brief presented to the Ontario Select Committee on Constitutional Reform, 1987 Constitutional Accord, also known as the Meech Lake Accord. The Meech Lake Accord was a package of proposed amendments to the Constitution Act 1982 to induce Quebec to accept and agree to this legislation. Alliance Quebec, an English minority-rights association, called for amendments to the Meech Lake Accord, the most important of which was a call for the addition of a clause affirming the unqualified supremacy of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms over the Accord. The Meech Lake Accord was eventually rejected in 1990 when several provinces failed to pass the draft agreement.
