Title |
Petition of the Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards and Others to the Governor General in Council for a Reference Case to the Supreme Court of Canada and/or Disallowance of the Official Language Act of Quebec
|
Abstract |
Request to challenge the constitutional validity of the Liberal Government's Bill 22 - The Official Language Act - enacted in 1974, that made French the official language of civic administration and services, and of the workplace in Quebec. Only children who could demonstrate sufficient knowledge of another language of instruction would be exempted from receiving their instruction in French. The school boards wished to challenge as unjust the language tests imposed on children under the legislation.
