Fascisme et communauté Italienne de Montréal d'après L'Italia Nuova (1937-1939)
Abstract
This study focuses on the Italian community in Montreal at the end of the 1930s, during the Fascist period. By examining Montreal's Italia Nuova newspaper during these years, the author seeks to highlight the information transmitted to Montreal's Italians community. According to the author, the newspaper had two fundamental dimensions during this period: community and propaganda. The paper's editor and senior journalist, Giulio Romano, sought to maintain a balance between these two dimensions to convey the fascist values in the community. Although fascism appears to be a predominant political philosophy within the community during this period, the author argues that Italian Montrealers joined fascist associations and participated in their activities to placate the immigrants' identity needs and to create a sense of belonging that they were missing since their arrival in Canada.
