Italian Identity in Montreal: Issues of Intergenerational Ethnic Retention
|
| Abstract |
An analysis of intergenerational changes that have taken place within Montreal’s Italian community since the 1950s. The author discovered that, over three generations, there has been a loss of linguistic connection to Italy, an erosion of traditional religious values, and socio-spatial amalgamation. The author concludes that the younger generation keeps ties with its ethnic heritage by upholding cultural symbols rather than cultural values.
