Abstract |
In 1989, the Italian-born Montrealer Marco Micone published his "Speak What" poem in the periodical Jeu: Revue de théâtre. The poem was a counter to Michèle Lalonde's 1970 "Speak White" manifesto. Micone's poem was written following the passage of Bill 178 (1988), which amended Bill 101 and imposed French as the only language for outdoor "public signs, posters and commercial advertising." The poem emphasizes the importance of respecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of non-Francophones in Montreal. Needless to say, the poem provoked strong reactions from some French nationalists in Quebec. The poem is reproduced in this book, along with an analysis by Lise Gauvin who situates it in Quebec literature and highlights its richness.
