When Nationalisms Collide: Montreal’s Italian Community and the St. Léonard Crisis, 1967-1969

Abstract |
During the language debates of the late 1960s in Quebec, Montreal’s Italian community found itself in the middle of a sometimes-violent conflict between Anglophones and Francophones. Forced to choose, the Italian community aligned itself with the Anglophones. The portrait that has been cast by some authors evokes the image of an Italian immigrant used as a pawn in a fight which generally was not his and which he could not understand. But by examining the Italian press of that era, the author believes that the St. Leonard crisis represented more than a fight over language rights and parents' right to choose the language of education of their children. He concludes that it was as much a dispute over the status of ethnic minorities in Quebec as it was over the language question. The author examines the immigrant’s “Italianita” and how it helped shape the response to ethnic tensions in St. Léonard.
