Abstract |
The memories and reminiscences of childhood, youth, adulthood and old age of James MacPherson Le Moine (1825-1912), lawyer, public servant and a prominent member of Quebec City's turn-of-the-twentieth-century English-speaking community. The bilingual MacPherson Le Moine, of Scottish and French-Canadian ancestry, was author of such books as Quebec, Past and Present (1876), Chronicles of the St. Lawrence (1878), Picturesque Quebec (1882), and Monographie et esquisses (1885). He was also a president and honorary librarian of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec. The editors point out that for over fifty years MacPherson Le Moine's forty-acre estate at Spencer Grange in Sillery was a crossroads of encounters and exchanges between people of different backgrounds and different ideological and political currents. His memoires describe the salons and practices of Quebec City's English and French bourgeoisie, and are full of socio-cultural observations on the nineteenth-century Anglophone and Francophone communities of the city. The book's text is in English with a parallel translation in French.
