Rabbis and Their Community: Studies in the Eastern European Orthodox Rabbinate in Montreal, 1896-1930
|
| Abstract |
An examination of three rabbis sharing the same communal territory – Rabbi Hirsh Cohen (1862–1950), a fixture in Montreal's Jewish community from 1901 to the late 1940s; Rabbi Simon Glazer (1876?-1938), Cohen's main rival for the chief rabbinate; and revolutionary thinker Rabbi Yudel Rosenberg (1859-1935). The author devotes much of the book to a discussion of the "kosher meat wars" that occupied the Montreal Jewish community in the early decades of the twentieth century.
