A biography of cabinetmaker Julius Barnard, born on July 18, 1769, in Northampton, Massachusetts. During the mid-1780s, he served his apprenticeship under Eliphalet Chapin, who operated a large furniture shop in East Windsor, Vermont. In 1792, he set up his own shop in Northampton, but by 1801 he had moved his business back to Vermont. In 1809, Barnard moved again, this time to Montreal, where he became a partner in a hotel (The Union Hotel) as well as a cabinetmaker. In 1811 he also he purchased property in the arrière-fief of La Gauchetière, to the north of the city. In 1812, with the outbreak of war between Great Britain (and its colony, Lower Canada) and the United States, Barnard returned to Massachusetts.
