The Poetry and Social Vision of F.R. Scott
|
Abstract |
A chronological and biographical examination of the poetry published by Montreal poet, lawyer and social democrat Frank Scott (1899-1985) between the mid-1920s and the early 1980s. The author sets the poetry in the context of Scott's maturing social perspective on Canada, which he sought to have it become a model of cooperation for international man. The author argues that Scott's social vision covered the full range of social relationships, according to which the best of the individual and the collectivity can be realized in a mutually responsible manner. The author examines how in his political commitments and in his poetry, Scott illustrated the continuing tension between the needs of the responsible and creative individual and the needs of the potentially homogeneous society.
