Title |
The Two Worlds of Quebec Education During the Traditional Era, 1760-1940
|
Abstract |
The author explores Quebec’s educational arrangements for French Catholics and English Protestants from the Conquest to the Second World War. He argues that the linguistic division of schooling helped to estrange French Catholics and English Protestants. He also points out that English Protestants’ greater wealth, smaller families and attraction to urban centres, along with the Catholic Church’s opposition to free compulsory schooling, meant that English Protestant schools attracted a much higher percentage of school-age children.
