Abstract |
Examines the difficulties faced by teachers, parents and school board trustees in providing for the educational needs of students in the Western Quebec district of Lochaber and Gore. Local poverty led to low salaries, limited supplies and inadequate facilities as trustees were loathe to enforce school taxes on their neighbours. Teachers, particularly young female teachers, rarely stayed more than one term.
