Growing up Trilingual in Montreal: Perceptions of Young College Students
|
Abstract |
The authors examine how trilingual youths who have grown up in Montreal acquired their linguistic repertoires and how they use languages in their everyday lives. The authors point out that census data revels how language behaviours in Montreal has changed quite radically as the legislated status of French as a lingua franca has improved. The authors' data from interviews with students provided information on how this period of linguistic transformation in the province was experienced in families of newcomers, and how multilingualism as a form of capital is perceived by this new generation of Montrealers.
