Abstract |
In 1839, the London-born Christopher Dunkin (1812-1881), editor of Montreal’s Morning Courier and a former Greek and Latin tutor, was charged by the newly-arrived Governor General, Poulett Thomson, with devising an ordinance for the reconstruction of the school system in Lower Canada. In 1841, he presented a draft bill that outlined the organizational structure of the school system that was adopted in Canada East and Canada West.
