Irish-Canadian Identity, Imperial Nationalism: Irish Book History and Print Culture in Victorian Quebec
|
Abstract |
The author argues that in Montreal, nineteenth-century writers like D’Arcy McGee, John Kearney Folan and Carroll Ryan, and periodicals like The Harp and the New Dominion Monthly, negotiated a middle ground in which the preservation of Irish traditions combined with the development of Canadian identity opposed to the republican principles of Irish-American nationalism.
