Abstract |
The Ontario-born Morley Calvert (1928-1991), conductor, bandmaster, composer and educator, grew-up in Montreal and graduated from McGill University in the 1950s. He taught instrumentalists and choirs in Montreal high schools from 1950 to 1972, and was director of the Imperial Singers from 1954 to 1956, and of the Montreal Citadel Band of the Salvation Army from 1960 to 1970. He also founded and was the director of the McGill University Concert Band from 1960 to 1970, and of the Lakeshore Concert Band from 1967 to 1972. In 1958 he founded the Monteregian Music Camp at Ayers Cliff, Quebec, which offered summer training for high school students. It closed in 1972. Calvert composed and arranged many works for band, brass quintet, and choir, but is best known for "Suite for the Monteregian Hills," published in 1961 by Berandol. The author points out that this musical piece is cherished by brass players worldwide and performed hundreds of times annually, making Calvert perhaps the most performed Canadian composer outside the country. However, the author points out, little was written about Calvert in Canada beyond about that one musical piece. In 1972, Calvert moved to Ontario, where he continued his musical career.
