Abstract
According to the publisher, this book is an "exploration of the lives and works of the Beaver Hall Group and the network of women artists that arose from it. Founded in 1920, the group was in the vanguard of bringing Modernism to Canada and its female members (unlike the Group of Seven, the Beaver Hall Group included women) now rank among the country's most outstanding painters." The mostly Anglophone Beaver Hall Group was Montreal's first association of Modern artists. Its official existence at its studio at 305 Beaver Hall Hill lasted three years, although many of the painters remained close friends and associates long afterwards. The ten female members of the Beaver Hall Group were: Emily Coonan, Nora Collyer, Prudence Heward, Mabel Lockerby, Mabel May, Kathleen Morris, Lilias Torrance Newton, Sarah Robertson, Anne Savage and Ethel Seath.
