Abstract |
A study of the development of Robert Hugh Ayre’s art criticism, first at Montreal's The Gazette from 1935 to 1937, and then at Montreal's The Standard from 1938 to 1942. The author points out that Ayre (1900-1980) believed that art and artists should play an integral role in society, and that society perceive its artists as essential stewards of social and cultural significance. Ayre's contention, the author argues, was that society should work toward creating a community integrated into the spirit and pattern of its culture, with the visual arts a central force.
