| Abstract |
The nurses of the Canadian Army Medical Corps who served in the First World War (known as "Bluebirds" because of the blue and white uniforms they wore) included many English-speaking women from Quebec. The authors single out Norah Pedley and Mabel Trenholm, who served in Belgian, Eleanor Jane Thompson who received the Military Medal for Bravery, and Gladys Irene Sare, who was "Killed in Action" when the hospital ship she was on, HMHS Llandovery Castle, was torpedoed off the Irish coast on June 27, 1918. In total, some 2,500 Canadian nurses served overseas during the war, and approximately 45 were killed by enemy action.
