Je me souviens? : le passé du Québec dans la conscience de sa jeunesse
Abstract
An examination of how young Quebecers, between the ages of 15 and 25, see (and interpret) their province's history. Researchers surveyed 3,475 secondary, CEGEP and university students, both Francophones and Anglophones, over a ten-year period. The author found that the majority of the students view Quebec's history as overwhelming negative, with Francophones believing that the villain for all the province's problems is inevitably English speakers, while Anglophones interpret Quebec history as a constant struggle with French speakers. What the author did find was an absence from Anglophone students' historical understanding was any reference to the important role that English-speaking Quebecers played in building the province.
