Arrivés à bon port: Immigrer en Amérique en 1911
Abstract
This children's book about immigrants arriving in Quebec in 1911 contains pictures taken by photographer William James Topley (1845-1930). Topley was born in Montreal and raised in Alymer, Quebec, across the Ottawa River from Ottawa. In 1864, Topley became an photographer's apprentice at William Notman's studio in Montreal, and three years later was placed in charge of a new portrait studio opened by Notman (his first outside of Montreal) on Wellington Street in Ottawa. The book tells the story of a ten-year old who was hired by a photographer to help cover the arrival of immigrants in Quebec. In the margins of the photographs, young Pierre adds his comments on what he sees, imagining the history of these people, especially the children.
