Montreal's Black Rock : The Forgotten Grave of the Irish Typhus Victims
|
Abstract |
The author outlines the history of the Black Rock, Montreal's only memorial to the thousands of Irish Famine immigrants who died from typhus on the city's waterfront in 1847, and the all-but disappearance from Montrealers' historical knowledge of the events surrounding this tragedy. The author contends that the history of the Black Rock tells the story of Montreal, of social class, religion, language and ethnicity, played out in the struggles over memorial space, which are highly symbolic and often politicized.
