Les Pays de l'Ottawa : l'Outaouais des origines à 1900
|
Abstract |
The film notes that the Outaouais is a border region always in search of an identity. Indigenous peoples occupied the area for over 6,000 years before white settlers arrived. The American-born Philemon Wright (1760-1839) and other English-speakers were the first settlers in Hull, arriving in 1800, and initiated the timber industry in the Outaouais. From the second half of the nineteenth century, with the timber barons and then with pulp and paper, the Outaouais began a rapid industrial shift. The film concludes with the fire that destroyed a large portion of the City of Hull in 1900.
