Abstract |
This short documentary is the first part of the Corporation, a film series about the inner workings of the Montreal-based Steinberg supermarket chain. Through the eyes of President Sam Steinberg (1905-1978), the film depicts the company’s growth from a hand-cart and bicycle corner grocery store, founded by Sam's mother, Ida, in 1917,, then a horse-drawn delivery wagon, to an international, diversified corporation. Disagreement among Sam's three children after his death led to the sale of the family grocery store business in 1989, and the Steinberg family name disappeared from the stores in 1992.
