John Simpson (1788-1873) : les députés de la vallée de l’Ottawa
|
| Abstract |
A biographical sketch of the British-born John Simpson (1788-1873), the Collector of Customs at Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, a member of the Rebellion Losses Commission, and a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1824 to 1827, and from 1841 to 1844. Although a reformer by inclination, he opposed Louis-Joseph Papineau and his Patriote movement. However, following the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, he displayed a compassion towards the rebels by convincing Lord Durham to grant a general amnesty to all political prisoners but the rebellions' leaders.
