Abstract |
The fourth of five essays by the author outlining the development of Canada's banking system from the Cession to the mid-1820s. The essays detail the origins of the Canadian banking system, tracing its roots to England and the United States. The author discusses the types of currency and exchange used after the Conquest, the development of currency between between 1791 and 1812, and the first banks in Lower Canada. The fifth and concluding essay (Vol. V, no. 1, October 1897: 1-21) deals with the first banks in Upper Canada.
