| Abstract |
The McGill University-educated Peter Bercovitch (1879-1942) was a Quebec (1916-1938) and federal (1938-1942) politician. In provincial politics, he was re-elected six times under the Liberal Party banner in the Montreal riding of Saint-Louis, serving for twenty-two consecutive years. Bercovitch was an ardent advocate for social justice and the rights of all Quebecers, regardless of their origin or religion. However, he was especially noted as a defender of the rights of the Jewish minority in Quebec, fighting for the education rights of Jewish children in the province. He also fought against anti-semitism that was prevalent in a number of Quebec newspapers during that period. The author argues that his defence of Jewish minority rights undoubtedly deprived him of a post in the Cabinet of Louis Alexandre Taschereau in 1931.
