How do Francophones Regard Quebec Anglophones and Their Issues of Concern

Abstract |
In January, 2001, the Missisquoi Institute released the
results of a Crop survey on the views of Quebec's Francophone population vis-à-vis the province's Anglophones. The survey was conducted amongst some 1,264 Francophone respondents. The survey concluded a reduction in the social distance between Francophones and their Anglophone neighbors. Bilingualism and social contact with Anglophones were increasingly important hallmarks among Francophone respondents. Francophone respondents indicate a high level of sympathy for a number of concerns within the Anglophone community, among them access to English-language health and social services, access to schools, and the presence of languages other than French on commercial signs. Overall, some 44 percent of respondents reported that they thought relationships with Anglophones had improved during the previous ten years.
