Constructing a Multicultural Identity at the Canadian Frontier: Mordecai Richler and Jewish-Canadian Writing
|
| Abstract |
The author argues that throughout his fifty year career, Montreal author Mordecai Richler (1931-2001) criticized Canada relentlessly. At first he accused his native country of having no identity, then he laughed because it was trying a little too conscientiously to create one. She contends that Richler's fiction writing reflects changes that occurred in Canada as it launched its quest for a national identity, while his own identity was lost somewhere between the United States and Great Britain.
