Abstract
Gerald Ephraim Hart (1849-1936) was the director general of the Citizens Insurance Company (1879-1890) and the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company (1890-1894). He also served as the secretary of Montreal's Numismatic and Antiquarian Society. Born in Trois-Rivières, the grandson of Aaron Hart, Gerald Hart lived in Montreal from 1869 to 1896 and from 1934 to 1936. The author outlines the negotiations leading to the transfer of Hart's collection of coins to the Government of Canada in 1883, and its eventual transfer to the Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada.
