Abstract |
Outlines the role played by English-speaking Montrealers, including the author, in “Canadianizing” the theatre in Canada from the 1920s to 1949. At the centre of this movement was Martha Allan (1895-1942), who founded the Montreal Repertory Theatre in 1929, and was an instigator in the creation of the Dominion Drama Festival in 1936. Also discussed by the author were the tensions that existed between Anglophones and Francophones of the Montreal theatre world during this period. The author (1910-2006) left Montreal for Toronto in 1949, where he became a reviewer and columnist for the Globe and Mail.
