Abstract |
The authors compare Montreal birth cohorts of 1859 and 1879 for French-speaking Catholic, English-speaking Protestant and English-speaking [Irish] Catholic residents. Their conclusion is that there was a strong cultural differential in infant mortality between the three groups. French Canadians had a higher infant mortality, shorter birth intervals and earlier age at marriage for both women and men. By comparison, Irish Catholics married later and rarely had short intervals between births. Among Protestants, there was a greater variability of birth intervals.
