Abstract |
A portrayal of the parliamentary newspaper columnists who were members of Quebec's Legislative Assembly press gallery between 1871 and 1921. The author explains the functioning of the press gallery and analyzes journalists' parliamentary columns published in the main Quebec daily newspapers during this period. The author also sets out to verify the hypothesis that parliamentary chroniclers carried out their tasks in a relatively homogeneous manner, regardless of the political orientation of the newspaper for whom they worked. She argues that her hypothesis was confirmed when comparing the journalists' published newspaper columns with the reconstituted journal of the Legislative Assembly debates. According to the author, the first "true" journalistic chronicler of Quebec's Legislative Assembly following Confederation was William Leslie Thom, who worked for the Quebec Morning Chronicle. Another nineteenth century English-speaking reporter of noted repute who covered the Quebec Parliament was Edward Thomas Davies Chambers (1852-1931), who supplied copy to the Quebec Morning Chronicle, the Montreal Star, and the Toronto World from 1876 to 1909.
