Abstract |
A study of the Scottish-born John Neilson's ideology and the reasons why he supported and later broke with Louis-Joseph Papineau. Neilson (1776-1848), a moderate reformer, was first elected to Lower Canada's Legislative Assembly in 1818 under the Parti Canadien banner, which evolved into the Parti Patriote, but broke with the party in 1834 over its growing radicalism and the violent tone and extreme nature of the 92 Resolutions which expressed support for American republicanism and the impeachment of the Governor General.
