Abstract |
According to the author, the settlement of Stanstead Plain began in March 1796 with the arrival of Captain Johnson Taplin from Newbury, Vermont. The settlement of Georgeville, formerly Copp's Ferry, began with the arrival of Captain Moses Copp in 1797. Beebe Plain came into being with the clearing of the forest by David and Calvin Beebe in 1798, and Rock Island dates to 1803 when a Colonel Kilborn and Andrew Young built a sawmill and grist mill in the area. The author outlines the economic development of Stanstead to the middle of the nineteenth century.
