Abstract |
The Montreal Repertory Theatre was founded on November 23, 1929, at Westmount's Victoria Hall. The following year, the MRT produced its first play, A.A. Milne's The Perfect Alibi. It mounted a regular series of plays every year until 1961. The MRT followed the Little Theatre tradition of Antoine, as well as later theatre developments in Britain and the United States. The author points out that at a time when no alternatives existed in Montreal, the MRT provided theatre education at a high level and helped in the formation of many distinguished careers.
