Objectif : commutation de tenure. Edward Ellice et le régime seigneurial (1820-1840)

Abstract |
British businessman and politician Edward Ellice (1783-1863) was one of the few Lower Canadian seigneurs who availed himself of the right to retrocede his seigneury at Beauharnois to the Crown in order to get it back in free and common soccage. By doing this, Ellice was able to sell the land, more than 100,000 acres, which would have been prohibited under the rules of the seigneurial system. The author examines Ellice's ideas and motives as well as his approach to obtaining the commutation. The author also analyzes the consequences of the commutation on the Francophone inhabitants of Beauharnois.
