Abstract |
Lily Ester Butters (1894-1980) ran a residence in the Eastern Townships for children with mental disabilities. The Cecil Butters Memorial Hospital, or the Butters Centre as it was more commonly known, opened in 1947 in Austin, Quebec. Starting with six patients the first year, the Butter Centre had 435 patients in 1972 when it was taken over by the provincial government. Following a government policy towards de-institutionalization, the Centre closed its doors in 1990.
