Abstract |
Anglo-Norman capital from the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey controlled the Gaspé fishery in the 19th century. Most of this capital was used to produce dried cod for the Mediterranean markets. The author examines the exploitation of the Gaspé fishery between Rivière-au-Renard and Percé by British (specifically Jersey) capitalists between 1760 and 1830, and the labour force involved in the fishery (French-speaking Acadians and English-speaking Loyalists). The Jersey company involved in this enterprise during the period under review was owned by Charles Robin.
