Abstract |
In 1843, the Montreal-born William Edmond Logan (1798-1875) was hired to undertake a geological survey of Lower Canada and Upper Canada. The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), based in Montreal from 1843 until 1881, evolved from this position. Logan served as the director of the GSC until 1870. The author examines how the GSC, under Logan's direction, yielded important economic and other benefits in mineral discoveries and developments.
